Eyecare Technology
Advance Eye Care Technology
As optometrists with a passion to give you the best eyecare experience possible, we have invested in many advance technologies for both children and adults to provide you and your family the widest range of comprehensive eyecare services.
Digital Retinal Photography
A picture can speak a thousand words or in this case, a photo of the back of your eyes can speak volumes about your eye health.
Digital retinal photography allows early detection of eye diseases that affect the retina such as diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration and many other eye conditions. It is one of the technologies we use to detect and monitor eye disease over time.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
The most advanced method of imaging your eyes is with OCT.
OCT is like ultrasound but uses light waves to construct a 3-D image of your eyes. It can detect eye disease at a microscopic level of 1-thousandth of a millimetre.
OCT can more accurately detect eye disease at the back of your eyes in its earliest stages for glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, and many other diseases that affect the retina. It can also be used to detect eye disease at the front of your eyes.
OCT is state-of-the-art technology, so it is a technology that not all optometrists can have access to. OCT is an invaluable tool for detecting early eye disease.
Corneal Topography
The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of your eyes.
It functions like a window that controls and focuses light so that you can see clearly.
Corneal topography gives precise and accurate measurements of the shape of your cornea.
It is essential for precise contact lens fitting, especially for specialist contact lens procedures such as Orthokeratology. You can read more about Orthokeratology here.
It is one of the tools that can be used to detect dry eyes and early corneal diseases such as keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration.
Corneal topography is a very specialized technology that is not readily available in standard practices.
Axial Length Biometry – Oculus Myopia Master
Myopia is the medical term for short-sightedness, which means that you can see things up close but not at a distance.
Another way of thinking about myopia is that the shape of your eye has grown too long for its own focusing power.
For children, we can measure the length of their eyes (axial length) to give a prediction of their future level of myopia.
Axial length biometry allows us to detect which children are at risk of developing myopia, especially high levels of myopia, so that early myopia control treatments can be given to reduce future complications.
For adults, axial length biometry is also useful to better understand the risks associated with myopia.
Axial length biometry is the future for managing myopia, especially in children.
We are one of a few practices within Victoria that has access to this technology.
Children’s Portable Slit Lamp
If you have had an eye test before, you may remember having to place your chin on an equipment and a light was used to check your eyes. This equipment is called a Slit Lamp, which is like a large microscope to examine the health of the front of your eyes.
For babies and little ones, this is just not possible and that is why we have a small children-friendly portable slit lamp that we can use to give your child the same thorough examination that we give for adults.
For adults who have mobility issues or cannot fit onto the chin rest, this is a very helpful device also.
Children’s Portable Autorefractor
Babies and young children can have vision problems but are not aware of it. For them, they think that everyone sees the way they do and that this is normal.
Our child friendly Autorefractor is one technology that can detect your child’s vision problem. It can more easily detect low and high levels of short-sightedness, astigmatism, and long-sightedness in your child and together with our other vision tests, we can ensure that your child is seeing as clearly as they should be.
Children Friendly Chart Projector
Babies and young children love to look at interesting and stimulating things, and a black and white letter chart is just not going to hold their attention.
That is why we use a dynamic chart projector that shows children friendly shapes, pictures and videos with sound that keeps them interested and entertained so that we can perform a thorough examination. We also use many different toys to captivate and hold their attention.
Rebound Tonometry
Checking your eye pressure is important for the health of your eyes. It can be an important test for detecting glaucoma, as well as when you experience eye pain, red eyes, headaches, and other conditions that can cause your eye pressure to go up.
Our I-Care Rebound Tonometer is a very gentle way of measuring your eye pressure. It is so gentle that you may not feel anything, and it can be used for babies and young children.
We can also measure your eye pressure with the traditional method that involves eye drops, which is the preferred method when monitoring glaucoma.
Slit Lamp with Anterior Photography
If you have had an eye test before, you may remember having this technology used to examine your eyes, except that our slit lamp comes with a difference.
A slit lamp is a large microscope that shows very fine details to detect eye disease at the front surface and the back of your eyes. Our slit lamp is equipped with high-resolution digital photography and video capacity.
We can digitally record and document signs of eye disease, so that you can understand and see what we see.
It can show you what the problem is and how treatment is making a difference for your eyes.
Visual Field Testing
Eye disease can affect your central vision, but it can also affect your side or peripheral vision which can be harder for you to notice. Testing your peripheral vision (visual fields) is essential for conditions such as glaucoma, optic nerve disease and other conditions.
By documenting how sensitive your peripheral vision is, we can detect eye disease and monitor for changes so that we can be aware if your treatment is working for you.
